Use native plants to build a butterfly garden at home!

In this video, Jessie and I look crisp in our uniforms and are replacing a lawn with a butterfly garden!

Here is some more info on getting started at home!

Put cardboard over the lawn.

  1. I would recommend using recycled cardboard just because it's better for the environment, but I was in a jam here, so I had to buy them. And I feel bad about it.

  2. This grass was thin, to begin with, but if you have healthy grass, I would recommend putting a thick layer of biomass, like straw, old grass clippings (use it against itself), or leaves in fall, under the cardboard first. The cardboard, then mulch.

We Dressed sharp.

We put mulch on the cardboard.

We got a load of PNW Native Plants!

  1. Keystone plants are the ones that support the largest number of butterfly species. We added almost 50 native plant species into this area and became popular with the local bee population. These are where the butterfly lives and breeds.

  2. We're going to seed with a native butterfly mix with a little extra showy milkweed to where the lawn used to live. The flowers are what the butterflies eat.

Essentially, we've created a small town for lots of butterflies and bees.

We planted everything!

  1. October and November are the best times to plant and seed for the fall. But we had some sprinklers in this yard, so we got a little jump start.

  2. Seeding in the fall helps some of the bigger perennials get established before spring.
