It’s late September, and the elderberries are ripe—plump, dark, and packed with nutrients. Elderberries are a true superfood, bursting with antioxidants and vitamins, making them a delicious and healthy addition to your diet.
Beyond their health benefits, elderberries are ecologically valuable: they provide berries for birds, shelter for beneficial insects, and support pollinators when flowering in spring.

Whether you want to make syrup, jam, muffins, smoothies, or popsicles, elderberries are versatile, flavorful, and fun to harvest. They are also an excellent native shrub to plant in your yard: low-maintenance, resilient, and wildlife-friendly.
Tip: Elderberries should always be cooked before eating to remove naturally occurring toxins. Harvest in late summer to early fall, when the berries are fully dark purple and juicy.
